Reiki is an ancient form of hands-on healing, rediscovered in Japan by Sensei Mikao Usui, who was born in 1865, and as a result of a near-death experience, he had a vision of the Great Mahavairocana Buddha, often referred to as the Healing Buddha..

Usui then began to study and teach this traditional healing modality. By the time he crossed over, in 1926, he had trained a number of master-level teachers. Ahead of his time, Sensei Usui trained women, as well as men, in his healing techniques.

He was greatly honored by the Emperor of Japan in his lifetime, and there is a beautiful monument to him at the Buddhist temple where this spiritual awakening occurred.

Fundamental to the teachings of Mikao Usui are the five basic precepts of Reiki:

Just for today I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today I will not worry.
Just for today I will not anger.
Just for today I will do my work honestly.
Just for today I will love and respect every living thing.
